Make no mistake, Nasi Padang and Nasi Kapau are different

West Sumatra is one of the regions famous for its distinctive culinary delights, with a variety of spices. Nasi Padang and Nasi Kapau are two kinds of original dishes from Ranah Minang.

Although at first glance the two of them look similar, Nasi Padang and Nasi Kapau are actually different. What are the differences between Nasi Padang and Nasi Kapau?

Menu Presentation
Judging from the presentation of the menu, these two dishes are very different. The menu at Nasi padang is usually served in a glass window. The menus are neat and tiered. It is also illuminated by lights which make the food color more vivid. Visitors can look at the storefront and choose what menu they want to choose.

Meanwhile, the menus at Nasi Kapau are served on a wooden table which is also tiered.

The origin
The origins of Nasi Padang and Nasi Kapau are different, even though they both come from West Sumatra. Nasi Padang is a term with a broad and biased meaning. This is because Nasi Padang refers to all dishes originating from West Sumatra. Even though the dish does not come from the city of Padang.

While Nasi kapau is a dish that originates from a village called Kapau. Nagari or Kapau Village is located in Agam Regency, West Sumatra. If you visit Bukittinggi, you can stop by the Slope Market which contains a block of Nasi Kapau sellers. Also called Los Lambuang.

Seller Position
There are unique differences between these two dishes. Nasi Padang sellers usually stand right in front of the glass window where the menus are located. Meanwhile, the seller of Nasi Kapau stands on, or in a higher position. Complete with a long spoon to reach the food.

Types of Vegetables
The types of vegetables served in Nasi Padang and Nasi Kapau are also different. Nasi Padang is usually complemented by cassava leaf vegetables, bamboo shoots, or jackfruit. Meanwhile, Nasi Kapau usually serves cabbage with long beans.

There is one special dish in Nasi Kapau, namely Gulai Tambunsu. Tambunsu Gulai is a curry where eggs and tofu are processed and wrapped in cow intestines. The chewy texture of the beef intestine combines the soft and dense mixture of tofu and egg. Nasi Padang is usually not equipped with this curry.
